![]() Sonic Frontiers will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It’s just a preview video, so there will likely be much more to see in the coming months. Additionally, the video showed a simple pressure tile puzzle and another puzzle where all you have to do is turn a statue to open a door. As Sonic ran, seemingly important monuments like a giant floating platform appeared in frame out of nowhere at certain points. For starters, the rails in the sky just look like lines in the distance and aren’t quiet as evocative of the sprawling natural wilderness and built-up landmarks we’ve seen in previous open-world games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Elden Ring. The overworld design and puzzles look a bit underwhelming. (Although, seemingly nothing happens when Sonic finally reaches the top of this magnificent tower.) Sonic traverses an entire island to arrive at what appears to be an upside-down floating pyramid in a matter of minutes. Throughout the video, we see Sonic using a combination of all his traversal abilities to scale a giant tower and move around the island. True to the core premise of the series, it looks like you can move across the world fast. In the footage, he uses it to extinguish some torches and solve a puzzle. The most notable departure from previous Sonic games is a new mechanic whereby Sonic can encircle objects with a trail of light to interact with them. There are also special glowing walls he can jump from and run up. Sonic runs around, using bumpers to propel him through the air he is also shown riding rails and using some bubble-looking objects to chain a series of jumps. As reported by Gematsu, the video games publisher filed a number of new trademarks last month, including a move to secure a trademark in both. The new footage comes courtesy of an IGN exclusive.Īll of the video takes place on an island with lush and sprawling, grassy plains. Sega recently filed new trademarks for a number of its franchises including one for a game called Sonic Frontiers, which may well be the name for Sonics mysterious 2022 entry. The video shows Sonic running fast (shocker), grinding on rails, scaling giant monuments, and making use of a new gameplay mechanic that involves a trail of light. A new seven-minute video reveals the island setting and its open world, as well as how Sonic will get around it. IGN promises even more Sonic Frontiers reveals all month long, so fans should expect to see more of Sonic’s upcoming adventure soon.We got our first real eyeful of the gameplay in Sega’s next 3D mainline Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers, on Wednesday. This lines up with previous reports that Sonic Frontiers will feature new, high-energy combat styles, as well as Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka’s desire to move the long-running Sonic The Hedgehog series in new and hopefully exciting directions with this latest installment.įans might still be uneasy about Sonic Frontiers in the wake of its divisive new gameplay trailers, but there is little denying that the game is trying something new with the time-tested formula of SEGA’s flagship platformer franchise - including giving Sonic a dynamic arsenal of novel attacks and maneuvers to challenge his many robotic enemies on his latest quest to stop the nefarious Dr. While this new Sonic Frontiers combat footage still contains plenty of classic Sonic staples like the Homing Attack and Sonic losing his life-sustaining Rings after being hit, many of his attacks and maneuvers feel new to the series. Finally, the Blue Blur faces off against a towering boss by running up its legs and unleashing a flurry of attacks at the weak spot at the top - causing each of its three sections to break apart. Once exposed, Sonic attacks at its vulnerable center with some kind of energy waves from his melee strikes. To combat this foe, Sonic runs around it in a circle, seemingly drawing a line on the ground to conjure a tornado that strips the robot of its circular armor. Then comes a variety of armored enemy that can throw their outer shields at Sonic like a boomerang. He is first shown fighting a pair of machines that look like masses of spheres floating together, using a combination of Sonic's classic Homing Attacks and flurries of rapid punches, kicks, and even charged whirlwind attacks to break apart the outer orbs and shatter the cores within. This trailer instead focuses on the combat options players will be able to utilize in Sonic Frontiers, as Sonic is seen battling an assortment of robotic enemies with a variety of attacks both familiar and new. Yesterday, IGN posted another Sonic Frontiers trailer to its official YouTube account as part of its month-long “ IGN First” promotion, one that is thankfully more action-packed than the previous footage.
